Whether the projects were big or small, each school submission to The Great EcoKids Challenge showed tremendous commitment and dedication towards improving the health of our planet.
1st Prize: a Sony VAIO Desktop Computer goes to Aqsarniit Ilinniarvik School in Iqaluit, Nunavut for:
Diverting their organics from the waste stream- Collecting and weighing diverted organics for the participating community
- Involving the entire community, both youth and adults
- Implementing Earth Day and EcoKids materials into activities
- Distributing environmental education literature translated into their native language, Inuktitut
- Striving to receive long term, permanent support from the city level
- Overcoming great odds given the harsh climate and circumstances
2nd Prize: a Sony Mini-DV Handycam Camcorder goes to Selkirk Elementary School in Whitehorse, Yukon for:
Implementing an anti idling campaign using EcoKids materials- Reaching out to the community to help improve the state of the environment
- Successfully reducing vehicle idling in a harsh climate
- Increasing community awareness and involvement in important environmental issues
- Creating sculptures from 'junk' to increase awareness and make use of disposable items
- Carrying out over 100 environmental activities
3rd Prize: a Sony Cyber-shot Digital Camera goes to E.J. James Public School in Oakville, Ontario, for:
Starting an environmental club with no previous environmental initiatives- Creating long term goals that affect the surrounding community
- Caring for a section of the Carolinian Forest
- Creating methods of alternate energy to cool down several classrooms
- Beautifying school grounds in conjunction with providing habitat
- Reducing waste materials
- Raising money for endangered species
- Carrying out additional environmental activities
