2001-2002 Winners

The winners of The Great EcoKids Challenge are but a few of the thousands of hands that helped to rejuvenate the planet in the 2001-2002 school year.

EcoKids are active all across the country and the 2001-2002 winners are proof! They are from Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta and serve as environmental inspiration to schools and students everywhere. The 2001-2002 winners took on projects that enriched their lives, and improved the state of their schools and communities, and ultimately, the health of the environment.

1st Prize: a Sony Computer System was awarded to: Chisholm Public School in Oakville, Ontario for:

  • constant assessment and improvement of their recycling program, working in conjunction with the Recycling Council of Ontario,

Grand Prize Winners: The EcoKids of Chisholm Public School

Chisholm Public School

It all started in 1989 when a handful of students from Chisholm Public School pitched-in to clean-up the community and help the environment.

Over a decade later, their excellent recycling and clean-up program is just one part of the Chisholm EcoKids daily activities. They have now gone a step further by expanding the 3 R's to the 7 R's - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink, Replenish, Respect and Research. They feel that cleaning up is just not enough!

This year the Chisholm EcoKids had a group of 70 out of a school of 275 students! Be sure to check out their Club Home Page.

2nd Prize: a Fuji Digital Camera was awarded to Haldane Elementary School in Chase, British Columbia for:

  • making recycled paper, plastic storage bags, flower planters and birdhouses and,
  • cleaning up and collecting numerous bags of garbage from the local rodeo grounds, the BMX track, the beach and the school yard,
  • contributing towards the health of the local environment by planting 1000 trees around Upper Chase Creek and two native species on the school grounds
Garbage - The whole story CD ROM

3rd Prize: an environmental CD-ROM of their choice, "Garbage - the Inside Story" and a Pizza Party were awarded to Mannville Public School in Mannville, Alberta for:

  • starting a compost program; sorting and recycling all their cans, bottles and juice boxes, holding litterless lunch competitions,
  • contributing to a healthier environment by using alternative ways of transportation and,
  • taking a trip to the bottle depot to discover where pop cans, bottles and juice boxes actually go and the process involved.

All EcoKids did an incredible job, whether it was holding litterless lunches or helping to restore salmon habitat in a local creek. A big thanks goes to The Great EcoKids Challenge sponsors Sony of Canada Ltd. and Fuji Photo Film Canada Inc. for the great prizes, and to all the dedicated hands that helped to make a difference.
