Unionville Meadows Public School

Our Green Team continually works hard to improve the health of our environment. This year, we planted six new trees on our playground to provide natural wind breakers and shady areas. The trees are an essential part of our Peace Garden outdoor classroom, a natural sanctuary in our schoolyard. To keep our schoolyard clean, we do regular cleanups and garden maintenance. Our Grade 3 classes are especially good at mulching our gardens to promote new growth and to discourage weeds. This helps us beautify our school grounds and allows us to plant trees in the spring and fall, like we did this year.

Students greening the community
Students greening the community.

Environmental awareness is very important to our Green Team. We have created displays to educate staff and students on various environmental issues. We have been raising awareness about the need to recycle though our recyclable art competitions. We also hold annual kite days to celebrate wind energy and promote our anti-idling campaign so that our school can become an emissions-free area.

Our other projects and activities include:

  • "Pennies for the Planet" fundraiser
  • Schoolyard Restoration Team
  • School-wide conference with "Green" guest speakers
  • Earth Rangers presentations
  • Participation in the Yellow Fish Road program
  • Adoption of endangered animals thought the World Wildlife Fund
  • Monthly community newsletter highlighting our environmental activities
  • Recognized by the Town of Markham in the "Communities in Bloom" contest
  • Recognized as an EcoSchool

We are proud of our commitment to the environment. We are continually looking for new ways to contribute to the health of the environment, improving and maintaining the quality of our school grounds and community. Although we are a young school, we have accomplished much and we plan to grow and improve even more as we strive towards a greener future.

"From seeds we soar, seeking greener grounds and more!"– A grade eight student
