Greenwood Public School

Our environment club started in the fall of 2007 and meets every Thursday afternoon. We are a group of energetic students who truly care about the world around them. Our group is concerned with educating students, staff and parents with the three R's - reduce, reuse and recycle.

Environmental Club present their cheer at the October assembly
Environmental Club present their cheer at the October assembly.

So far this year, we have spent time talking about reducing, recycling and reusing items at school and around the house. We initiated a garbage-free lunch day which takes place on the last Friday of each month. Students and staff are encouraged to use reusable plastic containers and thermoses rather than plastic wrap. We reduce garbage at the school by encouraging students and staff to take any garbage home with them.

We created an environmental club cheer and presented it to the school at an assembly in October.

This is our cheer:

We're the Greenwood Gators.

We're trash eliminators.

We'll make our school more green for you.

We hope that you will help us, too.

Count off - REDUCE

Count off - REUSE

Count off - RECYCLE

Count off - REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!

In December, the club collected gently used toys, books, puzzles and games and took them to the local Christmas Cheer depot to be distributed to needy children throughout Sault Ste. Marie. We also made bird feeders using toilet paper rolls, lard and sunflower seeds.

Club members enjoy visiting the EcoKids website where we learn a lot about environmental issues and we have lots of fun playing games on the site!
