Strathroy Community Christian School

Last year, we were able to install a 50-metre boardwalk into a wetland toward a creek that runs beside our school property. The boardwalk was installed by both parents and students, in consultation with the local Conservation Authority. We now use this boardwalk and surrounding wetland ecosystem to enhance some of our science units, as well as for the overall enjoyment of the student body during recess times.

During Earth Week we put together a presentation to show parents and other students how important the natural environment is. We also taught individuals how we can protect the natural wonders that are being destroyed. To continue to raise awareness, we put together a display entitled "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Respect" at the front entrance of our school.

In the fall, the Conservation Authority presented a lesson to the grade seven class on the aquatic species at risk in the St. Clair water system. Artistic tiles were created depicting the various species we studied and are now hannging in the new Museum Strathroy-Caradoc. The tiles hang beside an aquarium that houses many of the fish species that are native to our area.

To reduce the waste on school property and surrounding area, the Grade 1, 4 and 5 classes cleaned up garbage that had blown onto the school property and onto the roadways. During Earth week the students planted 32 native trees on our school property. The "Green Team", our school´s tree planting club, spends their recess time making sure the new trees are well watered and maintained. The grade eight class has taken time out of their end of year camping trip to complete an environmental service project at Pinery Provincial Park to work on cleaning the trails and restoring areas of the park to their natural state.
