Stratford Montessori School

This year, different grades took on different projects. One of our larger projects was designed and implemented in our Grade 7/8 classroom. We designed a game called HEAT. The students role-play as professional scientists doing real world experiments. They are engaged in a project to design housing for sustainable living. There is also a virtual part of the game that occurs through email and blog contact with a team of skilled experts. We presented our project and research to our city council during a meeting. Our goal is to encourage further environmental awareness in our community.

We also had an assembly for Earth Day where our Grade 2/3 students incorporated drama into their Arctic unit. We learned all about the Arctic on ecokids.ca and we loved doing the activities and games. We wrote and presented a play to show how Arctic wildlife are affected by global warming. We also presented ways that people can help to prevent climate change.

We have an environment club made up of Grade 4/5 students who created short presentations of their annual activities and were able to present at our assembly. To reduce plastic bag use this year, they sewed a number of cloth bags which were sold for $1 on Earth Day to raise money for our new city-wide junior environment club (C.A.R.E. Stratford Junior). They were also able to create 200 labels for light switches in our school to remind everyone to be energy-conscious.
