Morning Star Middle School

The Great Eco Kids Challenge

3rd Place Winner of the Great EcoKids Challenge 2007

Over the past five years our club has taken on many new initiatives. We are proud to say that our club has grown from only 8 members in 2002 to over 50 members in 2007. Some of our activities have included expanding our recycling program, hosting recycling demonstrations and planting trees around our school. To increase environmental awareness, we have also written and performed announcements and skits with the help of our mascot "Recycle Man ".

This year we raised money to purchase large recycle bins for our school cafeteria. In order to do this we sold Valentine´s Day "Corny-grams" (cinnamon flavoured popcorn with a love or friendship message) and Singing Telegrams (where teachers serenaded students by signing out love songs in cupid costumes). We also worked on dividing up our expanding Environment Club into four different committees: the Recycling Committee, an Environmental T-shirt Committee, an Earth Day Committee, and a Tree Planting Commmittee.

The Recycling Committee created the "Recycling Friday" program, where every class elected a Recycling Representative to bring all of their class' paper recycling to large collection boxes. Different announcements were made each Friday to promote recycling in a variety of ways. The T-shirt Committee designed our Environment Club T-shirt to increase awareness. This was so successful that we ended up selling some of our T-shirts to other students as well.

Our Tree Planting Committee was in charge of the beautification of our school. They organized the planting of more trees to add to our forest. Our Earth Day Committee worked very diligently to organize Earth Day presentations that were both interactive and interesting. We put together a slideshow of photographs taken by staff members of beautiful parts of the planet and set it to music. We also put together a game show based on the popular show "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" where environment-themed trivia questions were posed to students, using multimedia presentations to help encourage audience involvement. We also showed clips of "An Inconvenient Truth", the Blueman Group and featured our own Recycle Man.
