James Morden Public School

This year, our student council participated in some very interesting environmental initiatives. One of our major projects was the News Cast video, where we interviewed a member of Parliament, a recycling facility manager, and students at our school. We were able to visit the recycling depot, and we conducted an interview with member of Parliament, Rob Nickelson on Global Warming and what Canadians need to do to help protect the environment. The video explains the reasons why we choose to recycle and compost and the footage of the recycling depot helps to understand where our recycled goods go after they leave our blue boxes. We showed the video to the school during a school assembly.

Another project that we took on this year was organizing an intermediate school dance with an Earth Day Theme. All of the decorations were made from recycled waste, which only cost us about $4.00! One of the most creative ideas was making curtains to hang in the gym from old CD´s that we brought in. We chose to keep these curtains to use for decorations at future school events.

We worked hard to promote Earth Day this year. We promoted litterless lunches for Earth Week and noticed a significant decrease in the amount of garbage produced during that week. The Special Needs class participated in a Native dance and story telling project to honour and respect the Earth. The grade three class also participated by taking charge of the school-wide recycling program.

We created a Green Team to be responsible for the school cleanup around the schoolyard, and to help look after the front gardens of the school. This has really helped to keep our school grounds clean and green. We are eager to continue improving the school and other areas of the community and we hope to be able to use our video as a tool to help educate the students and community of James Morden.
