St. Gabriel School

This year we participated in and initiated many environmental projects to help the planet. We celebrated International Walk to School Day in October by designating every Wednesday as "Walking Wednesdays". Weekly announcements were made to remind students to walk to school and why. Teachers kept track of the number of walkers each week and at the end of each month, the class with the most walkers received the Golden Shoe Award

Our Environmental Club meets on a weekly basis. We recycle paper, cans, bottles, and batteries. We also organized an Earth Week Festival for the school. One day was set aside for students of every grade to participate in Environmental Bingo, poster making for the Clean Air Contest and a prayer service to show our appreciation of Mother Earth.

Other activities in which we participated included watching films like The Lorax and An Inconvenient Truth, and a weekly yard cleanup and a pop can recycling program. For our pop can recycling program, the COKE bottling company donates prizes for students who bring in the most pop cans. To date we have recycled 22 467 pop cans! Our environment club was awarded the Halton Youth Environmental Award of Excellence in April for all of our efforts to promote a clean and healthy Earth!
