Downtown Alternative School

This year we focused on three exciting projects. Students at our school participated in all of the activities and had lots of fun helping the environment!

Our first project was to create a special Global Warming Newspaper Issue. This involved many students in the school and helped to alert everyone to the types of threats that global warming may cause. For our second project, we focussed on improving our recycling and composting programs. We started by making an Earth Day presentation to the school on the importance of recycling and composting. We created posters and information boards to put up in the school lunchroom. Now, our cafeteria has a recycling bin and two vermicomposters which our Green Team takes care of everyday!

Our last project was researching, planning and preparing to help build a Peace Garden. Our Peace Garden consists of four raised beds: a Butterfly Garden, Six Nations Garden, Inuit Garden, and an Inca/Aztec Garden. We will help to build peace benches out of cob and decorate them with different mosaics to show the symbols of peace. We hope that this will be remembered and appreciated by future students.
