Bayview Hill Elementary School

The Bayview Hill Elementary School EcoKids have been very busy this year! We worked hard to start our first school-wide litterless lunch campaign. First we made lots of posters, announcements and presentations to let the school know how to make their lunches litterless. Once a week, classes get a chance to compete for the highest number of litterless lunches. We track everyone´s progress on a chart in the front area of the school. At the end of the year, the class with the best record, wins a cool prize.

We also decided to run an Endangered Animal Campaign. We conducted research and put together projects which we displayed for the school to see. We had two visits from Earth Rangers who spoke to us about things we can do to help protect endangered animals. We visited different classes in our school and did presentations about why various animals are endangered and what we can do to help.

We used the Eco-Calendar to present eco-facts during the morning announcements. Other activities that we were able to participate in are listed below.

  • Pitch-In Week to clean up the schoolyard and neighbourhood
  • Daily collection of recyclables
  • Tree planting
  • Walk to school days
  • "Green Themes" book list for Earth Week

We finished off the year with our Green Bin campaign for all Grade three students. Each day a different student in each class takes home the organic waste from lunch and puts it in their green bin. This really helps to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill from our school!
