Stonewall Centennial Environmental Club has had a very successful year. All of our activities show our dedication to making our school and community greener places to live and work. We began the year with a field trip to Fort Whyte Centre for the autumn goose flight. During our trip we learned about how to live in a sustainable way in order to protect the environment.
Our group is involved in activities throughout the entire school year. Our recycling team gathers paper, plastic and aluminum every week for recycling. We also have a group of students responsible for watering plants both in and outside of the school. In the spring they are responsible for watering the newly planted everygreens, native plants and flowers in the gardens and also for weeding and maintaining the flower beds.
During the winter we enjoyed being in the great outdoors by cross-country skiing once a week. In the warmer months our school has walk and ride to school programs where we encourage students to walk or ride their bikes to school instead of getting a drive. We also encourage students to remember the three R’s during the school year by putting up posters that show how to reduce, reuse and recycle.
We celebrated Earth Day this year with a schoolyard cleanup that included all the Grade 5 classes. We also worked with Katimavik students to help clean up the community. It was a very successful day.
Our current projects include potting new plants for the students and school and also building birdhouses to put up around the school and in our neighborhood.
