Haldane Elementary Green Kids

This year our school was recognized as the first in Canada to achieve Earth Status III through the SEEDS Foundation´s Green School Program. This status recognizes the 3 000 environmental activities that we have done over 17 years at our school. Some of our activities included community cleanups, tree planting, and gardening. This was an incredibly proud moment for us as a school and as a Green Kids Club.

At our school, we like to focus on doing things that are environmental and relevant both to our local community and the entire world. Recently, we have been focussing on global awareness as our theme for environmental activities. Last year we made recycled paper bead necklaces and homemade bath salts that we sold at our Earth Day Flea Market with the proceeds going to the Gardens of Hope Project in Madagascar. This year we have been raising money for H.A.V.E. (Help A Village Effort), a program designed to bring clean drinking water to villages in India.

For Earth Day we invited a speaker from TNRD Environmental Education into our school to speak on the "Wonders of Water", our Earth Day Celebration theme. The Mayor of our village also presented our newest official Green Kids Club members with a special presentation. We had organized lots of environmental activities to participate in for the rest of the day. Some of the activities included painting yellow fish by sewer drains, building birdhouses, making recycled paper, attending workshops on composting, recycling and forestry.
