Glen Elementary School

This year we worked on 16 different projects that helped to make us a more environmentally-friendly school. One of our first projects of the year was the Walk for Wildlife fundraiser. Local schools participated in the walk with us and we raised money for the World Wildlife Fund to help them with their climate change and endangered species protection projects. We also donated money to other environmental groups such as the David Suzuki Foundation and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.

We have been working on planting trees around our school area. We will be planting native trees in Glen Park which is directly beside our school. We have called an environmental consultant to come in and tell us where to plant and which species of native trees to plant. We are hoping our efforts will help the park recover from some of the storms we experienced last year.

Some other projects that we´re currently working on are listed below.

  • Help the Earth Poster Contest
  • World Wildlife Fund presentation
  • H20 club presentations for the school
  • Walk to School Wednesdays
  • Endangered species adoptions through WWF
  • Beverage and paper recycling programs
  • Anti-Idling campaign
  • Letter-writing campaign to the Prime Minister and Premier
  • Environment club newsletter
  • Litterless lunch days
  • Lights out days

One of our classes is currently working on plans for the building of our new school. Construction begins next year. As the students, we wanted to make sure that our new school would be as friendly to the environment as we are. In order to do this we incorporated alternative energy sources and green construction designs into the plans for the new school grounds. Once these were completed we were able to submit and present them to our principal for further consideration.
