In an effort to try and reduce waste around our school, two of our science classes work in the spring to pick up all the litter on the school grounds. We participate in these cleanups once a month. It is good exercise and it gets us out of the classroom to learn something about waste and the environment.
We also have an ongoing garden project. Students have learned how to trim, aerate and mulch the gardens each year. We use the garden as an outdoor classroom where students learn how to identify different plants and to decide which ones need to be pulled out. For some students, this experience is completely new and is always a lot of fun. We also try to plant as many trees as possible. We are currently trying to raise funds to buy mulch for our flower beds.
For Earth Day, we compiled a binder of activities and made it available for everyone to use. We also had a variety of trivia challenges and tips of the day. It was a lot of fun for everyone who participated and we learned a lot!
