Westglen School

Our school has been working on environmental projects since 1999 and we have been recognized as an EARTH II school with the SEEDS Foundation. This year we hope to complete our 3 000th project and become an EARTH III School.

Our Earth Patrol promotes environmental awareness at our school and to the larger Westglen community. We have monthly themes and present our projects on our Earth Patrol bulletin board. Some of our activities this year included:

  • Walk to School days
  • Take the Plunge water conservation project
  • Recycled Christmas tree decorations
  • Pitch In school yard and community clean up
  • Ducks Unlimited Environment Day fundraiser

Our most exciting project this year was our ReUse Fair. Over 200 people attended and dropped off items from our wish list including corks, magazines, art supplies, old jeans, and blankets. At the end of the day, these items were delivered to over 15 agencies such as the SPCA. We also had displays about worm composting, recycling, and artisans showing their crafts made from recycled materials. The parents also had a garage sale in conjunction with our ReUse Fair. The Earth Patrol girls not only had a chance to learn as they helped organize this event, but they also got to work with some Master Composters and make a difference. This will definitely become an annual event for us.

In September of 2007 we will be participating in the TD Great Canadian Shoreline Clean Up. We will be responsible for cleaning the pond area at Hawrelak Park.

It is so exciting to coordinate efforts at Westglen School where the students, staff and parent community are so receptive, educated and concerned about the environment. I can´t wait to see how the new school year will unfold!
