R.J. Hawkey Elementary School

Our school has worked very hard to become greener this year. We have a well-run recycling program thanks to the enthusiasm of the "R.J. Tree Huggers" and the other participating classes. Twice a week the Tree Huggers collect paper and cardboard recycling from classrooms. Once a week we collect juice, pop and water containers to take to the bottle depot for recycling. This year other classes got involved too – taking their recycling to our school´s official recycling bin.

We also worked hard to implement our cell phone recycling program. We have collected almost 50 cell phones! Our goal is to become an official cell phone depot in our city. We have gathered community support by having a collection bin at a local phone store and advertising on our city and school websites.

During Earth Week, we made morning announcements to the school. We provided daily tips and facts on how to be environmentally friendly. We also started a litterless lunch campaign. We compared the amount of waste produced from one day´s lunch with the amount of waste produced from our litter-free day and there was a noticeable decrease!

The Tree Huggers are encouraged to take leadership roles when working with each other and other students. Not only are they role models for other students but they encourage our school and community to be environmentally active!
