Pines Community School

Overall, we are a very environmentally-friendly school. Last year, we achieved Earth School status from the SEEDS foundation, recognizing our 1 000 completed environmental projects. Our EnviroKids Club is made up of Grade 4 and Grade 5 students who are very active throughout the school and try to encourage other students to become more environmentally aware. The EnviroKids visit each classroom during the lunch hour to check for garbage-free lunches. For those students who are found to have no garbage lunch items, we hand out draw tickets for environmental prizes that we are giving away.

To counter organic waste, we work in a worm-friendly environment in the Grade 4 classroom. Here, we operate a vermicomposter to reduce the amount of waste from unfinished lunches. Also, the EnviroKids collect all the containers and paper recycling boxes in our school. This helps to reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill and redirects it to the recycling facilities, where it can be broken down and used again.

To enrich our science curriculum the Grade 4 class goes on weekly walks around the local community, where we can enjoy the outdoors and also pick up litter found along the way. Our EnviroKids also sponsored an Earth Day Challenge Carnival this year, with numerous events to challenge our community to think more environmentally. We also assisted residents at the Pines Seniors Lodge with planting flowers in their courtyard garden and participated in the "Pitch In Program".

It is through all of our efforts in school and in our greater community that we share our environmental knowledge with others. We hope to inspire other kids to be part of a solution and do our part to set an example and make a difference both in our school and our community.
