Delwood Elementary School

This year we have been working to rejuvenate and beautify the school courtyard. We added compost, new dirt and a variety of perennials and annuals to our gardens. Our Green Thumbs Club is very good at maintaining our school green spaces and we hope to continue to plant in our gardens every year.

This is the first year we have taken on the "Earth Day Grocery Bag Decorating Challenge". The entire school decorated 500 borrowed paper bags and returned them to the nearby Sobeys to distribute on Earth Day. This was a huge success – and a lot of fun!

We also keep vermicompsters in the Grade 4 classrooms. We designate two students per week to bring in extra "food" for the worms. Not only do we learn about the decomposition cycle, but we get to learn about alternative ways to deal organic with waste. Some students even brought this idea home and now have their own household vermicompsters.

Our recycling program is school-wide and we work hard to make sure students are recycling properly. We do a weekly collection of bottles and juice boxes to return for refund. The funds raised from this program go towards replenishing science experiment supplies. We also collect paper from classrooms for curb recycling collection.
