ecoMentors Program

“I loved being a teacher for an hour. I think I would love to make teaching my future career, especially related to the environment.”

As an ecoMentor you will work directly with a class of elementary students, teaching them about our environment and leading them in a variety of activities. You can do this alone, or with another ecoMentor. You will deliver 1 hour lesson plans on various topics to elementary school students in the grades 1-6. You can decide to give different lessons to the same class, or to deliver the same lesson in different classes/ schools. You can pick a lesson plan from our overview of lesson plan topics.

ecoMentors will provide you with specific teaching skills and the opportunity to gain some teaching experience. The program will also give you leadership and mentoring experience, which can be applied to a variety of job situations. And in addition to learning about environmental topics, you will also get some exposure to a variety of approaches to environmental education.

The ecoMentors program is designed to give you an opportunity to explore your career interests, gain work experience, develop workplace skills and increase your work portfolio. Some of the workplace skills that you could develop include working well with a supervisor, oral communication, goal setting, providing feedback, punctuality and professionalism.

One of the most exciting things about the ecoMentors program is the opportunity to be certified as an ecoMentor through Earth Day Canada. This certification will provide future employers with an indication of your related experience in the teaching and environmental fields. For more info about ecoMentors certification you can contact the Program Manager (ecomentors@earthday.ca).

By participating in this program you can achieve your community involvement hours.

Other programs that Earth Day Canada offers are the EcoKids Program and the Toyota Earth Day Scholarship.
