Q. I am a high school student: How can I become an ecoMentor?

Q. Do I have to teach alone?

  • No, you can team up with another student if you want

Q. How do I decide what topic to teach?

  • Usually the elementary school teacher will have preferences for specific topics that they are teaching at the moment. Always contact the elementary school teacher to discuss the topic of your lesson.

Q. I am an elementary school teacher; how do I invite an ecoMentor to my class?

  • An elementary school teacher can request an ecoMentor for his/her class. Please use the online Application Form or contact the ecoMentors Program Manager.

Q. Who do I contact for further information?

Q. Does an ecoMentor have to work with an EcoKids school?

  • No, an ecoMentor does not have to work with an EcoKids school though it is an option open to them. An ecoMentor can work at the elementary school(s) they went to before moving onto secondary school or the elementary school(s) that are connected to their secondary school or they can request assistance from the ecoMentors Program Manager with placement.

Q. Does this program cover the high school requirement for volunteer hours?

  • Yes, the ecoMentors program can be counted towards those hours for your secondary school diploma. As an ecoMentor you can achieve your community involvement hours in the following way:
    • ecoMentor Training session - 3.5 to 6 hrs
    • In-class visit - 3 hrs (1.5 hr preparation & review, 1 hr lesson, ½ hr travel)
    • ecoMentor Focus Group - 2 hr
    • ecoMentors can complete 40 hrs of community involvement through 12 in-class visits

Q. How does the ecoMentors certification work?

  • To receive certification we require that ecoMentors do at least 4 classroom visits. Certification can be helpful for your future career and includes certain job skills that you can use on your resume.

Q. Is there a fee to participate in the ecoMentors program?

  • No, there is no fee attached to the program. It is free for the students and schools to participate in.

Q. Is there an age limit to be an ecoMentor?

  • The suggested age to be an ecoMentor is between 15-18 years old.
