What is ecoMentors?
ecoMentors is an environmental education program that trains and provides support to high school volunteers to deliver engaging and fun environmental education lesson plans in elementary schools across the GTA. ecoMentors matches high school students with elementary classes to provide an enriching and rewarding experience for both groups.
High school students have an opportunity to explore their career interests, gain experience in teaching, leadership and environmental work, as well as developing general workplace skills.
Elementary students benefit from having an energetic, enthusiastic young mentor to provide input, guidance and assistance in their exploration of environmental topics.
Elementary teachers will receive the assistance of an energetic and eager high school student to help enhance the environmental learning of the class by using curriculum linked materials.
The ecoMentors program creates unique relationships between different groups of people: high school students, elementary students, high school teachers and elementary teachers. The program fits well with the work and co-op education experiences that are part of many high school programs.
