Appalachian Mountains

Appalachian Mountains

These mountains spread 2,500 km from Canada to the southern United States. The Appalachian Mountain range is one of the oldest in the world since scientists say that it is about 400 million years old! If you hike along the Appalachian Trail it may take 5 or 6 months to complete—now that takes a truly dedicated hiker!

Appalachian Mountains

Bay of Fundy

This place is world-famous for its gigantic tides, some of which are as high as a four-story building! Twice a day the Bay fills and empties 100 billion tonnes of water, which cause these tides to be the HIGHEST in the world! You can stand on top of a sandy section of the bay, and then go kayaking on the same spot just a few hours later! The bay is also home to animals such as whales, dolphins, seals, seabirds and many others.

Magnetic Hill

Magnetic Hill

There's a place just outside of Moncton, New Brunswick where cars seem to roll uphill with no help at all! It was first noticed in the 19th century when farmers found their horses straining to pull wagons when going downhill. Yet, when the horses returned to travel uphill, the wagons would roll into the horses' feet! Today it's a major tourist attraction. You can drive your car to the "bottom" of the hill, stop, put your car into neutral, and then coast "uphill" effortlessly! How does this work? Believe it or not, it has nothing to do with magnetism. What is really happening is an illusion. Because of the way the land was created, it looks like you are going uphill when you are really going downhill!
