Unique Qualities:

The bluefin tuna is a big fish! It can reach over three metres in length and weigh over 600 kg. Plus, it's a fast swimmer, reaching speeds of over 80 km per hour, about the speed limit on country roads. The younger fish stick together in schools but the older ones are usually alone.

Can be Seen:

In the Atlantic Ocean by Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, all the way down to Brazil.

Likes to Hang Out:

Splashing on the surface of the ocean and diving in the deeper waters.

Likes to Eat:

Other marine creatures, including herring, mackerel and squid.

Status:

The southern bluefin tuna is listed as critically endangered, while there is not enough data on the northern variety to make a proper assessment.

Did You Know?

Did you know that the bluefin tuna's circulatory system allows it to maintain a body temperature of about 10 to 15 °C above that of the water temperature? This adaptation allows the bluefin to survive in the cool North Atlantic ocean, which is about 10°C in the summer.
