Alligator
Common Name:

Alligator

Scientific Name:

Alligator mississippiensis

Unique Qualities:

American alligators are key species in their ecosystems. They create "gator holes" by sweeping their large tails. These holes retain water during the dry seasons. Sometimes, these holes are the only sources of water around. They become critical to the survival of many insects, turtles, fish and wading birds that otherwise may not have made it through the dry seasons.
