Unique Qualities:
Least chipmunks are the smallest of all chipmunks. They have black and white stripes down their backs and average only 190 mm and 50 g. They build complex burrows for the winter with several rooms, and have secret exits for quick getaways.
Can be Seen:
Least chipmunks are found from the Yukon, across central Canada, through to Ontario. Their range also extends along the Rocky Mountains into the United States.
Likes to Hang Out:
Least chipmunks love to live at the edges of forest, where trees aren't too close together. They like an area with lots of stumps and logs for summer burrows and to hide food.
Likes to Eat:
Least chipmunks eat a wide variety of foods including nuts, berries, fruits, grasses, fungi, snails and even insects.
Status:
Currently least chipmunk populations are healthy. Their biggest threats come from people who intrude into their habitat, and from hunting and trapping.
