Wood frog
Common Name:

Wood frog

Scientific Name:

Rana sylvatica

Unique Qualities:

They can be distinguished by a black patch that extends over the tympanum (ear) to the base of the front limb. Because of this characteristic, they are referred to as the frog with the "robber's mask."

Can be Seen:

You can find them ranging from Alaska through much of Canada where winters are very severe. They are the only North American frogs that are found north of the Arctic Circle.

Likes to Hang Out:

Moist woodlands in eastern areas open grasslands in western, tundra in the far north.

Likes to Eat:

Wood frogs eat a variety of insects and other small invertebrates, especially spiders, beetles, bugs, moth larvae, slugs and snails.

Status:

Wood frogs populations appear stable. The range appears to be expanding west into the prairie region. The biggest threat is forest fragmentation in developing areas.
