Unique Qualities:
This small salamander is reddish-brown with gray sides. The belly is white with black spots. The unique thing about this animal is that it has four toes on the hind feet! The total length, including the tail, may be about 10 cm.
Can be Seen:
Four-toed salamanders are found in southern Ontario, southwestern Quebec, Nova Scotia and Fundy National Park in New Brunswick. They are also many of them east of the Mississippi River in the United States.
Likes to Hang Out:
These salamanders are only seen in bogs and flood plains in woodland areas. They also like to hang out in nearby hardwood forests. Adults lay eggs between moss plants.
Likes to Eat:
They like to eat insects and insect larvae, spiders, worms and other small invertebrates.
Status:
There is no significant population decline of the four-toed salamander although their habitats are always under threat due to human activity.
