Common Name:
Eastern newt
Scientific Name:
Notophthalmus viridescens
Unique Qualities:
Newts are known for their elaborate courtship displays. When threatened by a predator they assume a posture that displays the bright colour of the underside. This presumably warns the predator that they are toxic.
Can be Seen:
Found in southern regions of Northwestern Ontario, near Lake Superior.
Likes to Hang Out:
Eastern newts need small semi-permanent woodland ponds for breeding. They live in forests during their terrestrial (eft) stages, shelter under logs, leaves, rocks and other objects. Aquatic adults are found in pools, usually surrounded by woodland.
Likes to Eat:
Newts in all stages feed on small invertebrates such as small crustaceans, fairy shrimp, amphibian and fish eggs. Insect larvae are also important adult foods.
Status:
Newt populations are currently healthy but they are affected when habitats are polluted.
