Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than re-starting your engine.

What does idling do for you? Nothing! Yet, many people idle their vehicles out of habit. Our school is asking that you break that habit by taking part in Switch off! A Pollution Solution. Please Switch off the next time you drop your children off or pick them up from school. This will help to create a cleaner, healthier environment where your children work and play.

Here are some of the reasons to switch off:

• An engine that is idling creates 2 times the amount of greenhouse gases than that of a driving engine, idling contributes to climate change.
• The exposure to idling fumes is actually greater inside a vehicle than outside a vehicle.
• Children are more affected by air pollution more than adults because of their smaller size, the fact that their lungs are still growing and they spend more time playing outdoors.
• Idling costs you money. It causes damage to your engine and wastes fuel -- each day Canadians waste $1.8 million of fuel by idling their vehicles.
