Over 100,000 people live in Canada’s North. They live in cities, towns, and small communities in the Northwest Territories, Yukon Territory, Nunavut, Northern Ontario, Northern Quebec and Labrador. People in these regions have similar views on many issues, but there are also regional differences based on different histories and experiences.
The people that live in Canada’s North are closely tied to the land. The sometimes harsh climate conditions have an impact on the lifestyle and culture of northern people.
The majority of people who live in the North are Aboriginal (mainly Inuit). The languages spoken include English, French, Inuktitut, and many other Aboriginal languages. Many Aboriginal languages were once only oral languages. This means that they were only spoken and not written.
