Whether the projects were big or small, each school submission to The Great EcoKids Challenge showed tremendous commitment and dedication towards improving the health of our planet.

1st Prize:a Sony VAIO Desktop Computer goes to E.J. James Public School in Oakville, Ontario for the following environmental initiatives:


Improving the Health of The Environment

A few students from the Enviro Club

  • Paper, plastic and pop can recycling with collection by students.
  • Year round litterless lunches.
  • Participating in the Pitch In campaign to clean up the school yard and nearby public park.
  • Collecting used batteries, ink cartridges and pop can tabs in support of local charities.
  • Working with a major corporation (Dupont USA) and local parent to being a solar collection project and generate solar power for the school.

Participating in Community Initiatives

  • Being the first group to officially adopt a local park as part of the Oakville Adopt-a-Park program.
  • Convincing the Town of Oakville to take on the park as a Stewardship Project.
  • Participating in the Town's 20 Minute Makeover (town wide clean-up).
  • Revamping the school garden for the Spring season.

Raising Environmental Awareness

  • Holding an Earth Day assembly educating the school and parents about the effects of anti idling, littering, over packaging and other environmental impacts.
  • Regularly incorporating EcoKids materials into the curriculum.
  • Creating educational posters on various environmental issues.
  • Continuing their diverse environmental club for a second year and involving 30 NEW members.

Improving the Health of the Environment

  • Implementing "Walking Wednesdays" where the whole school is encouraged to take active transportation to school and awarding classes with the highest number of participants.
  • Challenging the local business community to do the same.
  • Using the EcoKids anti-idling unit to conduct a survey on the number of cars that idle outside the school at dismissal time.
  • Sharing the survey results and educating parents on the ill effects of idling.

Raising Environmental Awareness

  • Holding an Earth Day assembly focusing on the One Tonne Challenge.
  • Communicating ways to live more sustainably to the entire school using weekly announcements, posters, school newsletter and a bulletin board.
  • Creating an ecological calendar that provides energy and resource reduction tips.
  • Calculating their environmental footprint and then creating personal action plans to reduce their impact.

3rd Prize: a Sony Cyber-shot Digital Camera goes to Christ Lutheran School in Kitchener, Ontario, for:

Improving the Health of The Environment and Taking Community Action

  • Submitting a signed petition to the mayor and suggestions to the location of a community composter.
  • Convincing the City of Kitchener to implement a recycling and composting program at a popular nearby park.
  • Cleaning up nearby parks and trails as a whole school.
  • Encouraging recycling within the school.

Promoting Resource Conservation

  • Reaching out to the community through questionnaires that encourage them to drive less and recycle more diligently, challenging their family members to produce less garbage and take shorter showers.
  • Tracking how much electricity is used in classrooms.
  • Using EcoKids materials to educate and institute change.
